In honor of Earth Day, we're sharing this photo of Kristy Mumma, MBA and her son Jake during their very first Patapsco watershed clean up with Jon Merryman in 2022. Jon makes it his mission to clean up the watershed and Kristy and Jake have joined him for several clean ups since first learning about his efforts via social media. Jon's commitment to doing his part to protect our planet is inspiring! Thank you, Jon! There are so many ways to help make a difference for our environment and learning how to properly destroy and decommission technology equipment is an important one. Did you know that if not disposed of properly, toxins and metals from computer equipment can seep into the ground, hence polluting the environment? Here are some easy steps you can take before disposing of older technology to ensure you're doing your part to protect the environment: 1. As with any major change, always backup your PC before donating, retiring or recycling. 2. Before it leaves your possession, you want to make sure that the hard drive is wiped and your data cannot be recovered. You can use a tool that deletes the data and then performs overwrite or wipe cycles. If using a Windows PC, you can use the Windows Reset this PC tool to clean your hard drive. Make sure to select the Clean Data from the advanced options, to ensure you get the full wipe of the hard drive or drives. 3. If you are feeling particularly hands on, you can remove the hard drive and destroy it to ensure no data is recoverable. Smashing and drilling them are common options. Make sure safety precautions are taken. 4. E-waste such as computers are considered hazardous, and should not be tossed into the garbage. Donate or recycle your electronics to ensure the toxins and metals do not get into the environment from a landfill. Not sure where to donate? Consider a local senior center, school or training program to see if they could put your PC to new use. There are also organizations the puts PCs to work for a good purpose.
